Nook Acoustic Performance Guide

Because privacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each Nook Pod is engineered to create the right kind of quiet — balancing privacy, comfort, and connection.
CLASS NAME SPEECH REDUCTION WHAT IT MEANS IDEAL FOR
CLASS A+ Total Privacy 33 dB and above The gold standard in acoustic insulation. Conversations are completely inaudible from the outside. Executive offices, HR or legal meetings, therapy sessions, high-stakes calls.
CLASS A Private & Secure 30–32.9 dB High-level speech privacy. Voices are softened and unintelligible beyond the pod. Senior one-on-ones, strategy sessions, confidential client calls.
CLASS B Quiet & Focused 25–29.9 dB Balanced acoustic comfort. External noise fades, internal speech is muffled but natural. Video calls, creative work, hybrid collaboration, deep focus sessions.
CLASS C Balanced Ambience 20–24.9 dB Noticeable sound softening — great for collaborative energy without distraction. Team huddles, short calls, creative brainstorming.
CLASS D Light Acoustic Buffer 15–19.9 dB Reduces background noise slightly but keeps you connected to the space around you. Relaxed breakout areas, dynamic offices, shared work lounges.
UNCLASSIFIED Visual Pod Only Below 15 dB or Untested Primarily aesthetic or spatial dividers — no acoustic performance rating. Lounges, social hubs, and open creative spaces.

The Truth About Soundproofing — And Why It’s a Good Thing

Let’s get one thing straight: Nook pods aren’t completely soundproof — and that’s intentional. Absolute silence might sound ideal, but in reality, it’s unsettling. It isolates rather than inspires.

At Nook, we design for balance — enough acoustic insulation to keep your conversations private, block distractions, and help you focus — without cutting you off from the rhythm of the workplace.

Sound Insulation vs. Sound Blocking — The Subtle Science

Sound insulation reduces how much noise passes through the pod, softening outside distractions and containing conversation.

Sound blocking is about reflection and absorption — achieved through layered walls, dense panels, and precision-engineered acoustic foams.

Together, they create a natural hush — quiet enough to concentrate, but still comfortably connected to your surroundings.

Comfort is Non-Negotiable — That’s Why Airflow Matters

A calm mind needs fresh air. Each Nook is equipped with a high-performance ventilation system that refreshes the air up to 35–50 times per hour (depending on size). The result? A space that stays cool, breathable, and comfortable — even during back-to-back calls — without ever compromising acoustic quality.

Smart Sensors, Smarter Spaces

It’s the quiet details that make all the difference. Nook pods use PIR motion sensors to automatically control lighting, airflow, and occupancy indicators. With a built-in 20-minute delay, nothing switches off mid-thought. It’s seamless automation designed for how people actually work — thoughtful, not intrusive.

Acoustic Classes — Clarity Made Simple

All Nook pods are tested against ISO 23351-1 standards, which measure speech reduction from inside the pod to a point 2 metres outside. Since there are no certified testing labs in South Africa, we’ve benchmarked our pods against internationally accredited models — and translated the results into an easy-to-understand acoustic classification system. This lets you choose the right level of privacy for your space — whether you need focused work zones, confidential meeting areas, or flexible collaboration pods.
